I searched the Internet for lists of the best writings by Edgar Allan Poe. Criteria included the stories and poems being ranked, not just listed, and generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I found 17 different ranked lists online of “best stories or poems by Edgar Allan Poe.” Then I averaged the rankings each one got and divided that average by a factor of the number of lists it was on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The writings that were on the most lists (out of 17):

  • The Fall of the House of Usher – 13 lists
  • The Masque of the Red Death – 12 lists
  • The Tell-Tale Heart – 12 lists
  • The Black Cat – 11 lists
  • The Cask of Amontillado – 11 lists
  • The Pit and the Pendulum – 11 lists
  • The Murders in the Rue Morgue – 11 lists
