I searched far and wide for lists of best monster movies of all time. Criteria included the movies being ranked, not just listed, and covering all time, not just a decade. The lists were generally created by groups, whether teams or committees or based on general public voting (like Ranker.com).

I was able to find 26 lists. I took the 26 lists and added all their content into a spreadsheet, noting the rank of every film. I ended up averaging the rankings each movie got (there were 152 that were on at least 2 lists) and dividing that average by a factor of the number of lists that movie was on. The lowest score meant a high ranking average on many lists. The complete spreadsheet is attached at the bottom.

The movies that were on the most lists (out of 26) were:

  • Jaws (1975) – 23 lists
  • Godzilla (1954) – 21 lists
  • The Thing (1982) – 20 lists
  • Alien (1979) – 19 lists
  • King Kong (1933) – 19 lists
  • Tremors (1990) – 19 lists
  • Cloverfield (2008) – 19 lists
  • Frankenstein (1931) – 18 lists
  • The Fly (1986) – 18 lists
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) – 18 lists
  • The Host (2006) – 18 lists
  • Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) – 16 lists
  • Jurassic Park (1993) – 15 lists
  • The Mist (2007) – 15 lists
